The season from Thanksgiving leading up to Christmas is a time of reflections for me. I like to take the time and review the year and establish goals for the new year. As a perfectionist, I tend to look at what I may not have done, so I do an exercise – I remind myself to count my blessings.
On this particular Sunday, I was moved by a friend’s sharing at church. Her mother had been sick and living with her. She was extremely grateful to have the opportunity to care for her mother, but she missed being able to go out and grab a cup of coffee with her sisters. Something that was once “small” became a luxury.
John and I were craving for dim sum that day, and we headed to one of our favorite restaurants in the peninsula – Asian Pearl. The line was long and worth it. We ordered a few dumplings and a frog porridge.
As I was sipping the hot porridge and enjoying the delicious meal, I couldn’t help but to give thanks for all these luxuries. While it may seem small, I was grateful that John and I had the time to relax. We had the funds for dining out and nothing that prevented us from this spontaneous meal. Both of us had jobs that allowed us to enjoy conversation and company with each other on weekends.
As we head to the end of the year, I want to continue counting my blessings. I also want to extend the invitation to YOU – What are you grateful for this season?
