Glühwein: A Christmas Tradition

With December here and the holidays right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to share my family’s recipe for gluehwein. Gluehwein is a traditional German holiday drink often enjoyed at outdoor Christmas markets. It’s a mulled wine that is served warm and smells like Christmas in a cup. It’s simple to make and is always a huge hit.

Ingredients

1 Cup Water
1/3 Cup Sugar
2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
1 Clove
2 Cinnamon Sticks
Juice of 1/2 an Orange
Red Wine (I suggest Burgundy, but you can use whatever you have lying around)

Place all ingredients except the wine in a pan and boil for 15 minutes (I also like to throw in the lemons and oranges I juiced). Add wine at a 1:1 ratio. Slice fresh lemons and oranges to float on top. Serve hot in mugs and enjoy.

Thanks for sharing! I’ve been long talking about missing the gluhwein I had around Europe with friends and family. I’m so excited to try making this!
