One of the perks living in New York City is that you have many ways to purchase a day-of-performance ticket for a Broadway/Off-Broadway show for a GREAT deal any day you want as long as there are available tickets (plus a little bit of luck).
One way is to go to the TKTS discount booth in Times Square, Downtown Brooklyn or South Street Seaport. They usually have tickets for up to 50% off. You can check online to see what shows are available for sale. Although there always seems to be a long line, it goes by quickly!
Another way is to get rush tickets by standing in line at the box office of the musical of your choice. You can buy up to 2 tickets for $25-$30 each if you get to the box office early enough (10 A.M or 12 P.M. depending on the show)
My favorite way of getting tickets though is through the lottery system. Although you are not guaranteed a ticket, it is very fun and exciting.
Here is how you participate in one:
1. Go to the theater 2.5 hrs before the show time of that day.
2. Write down your name and the number of tickets you want on a piece of paper the staff gives you (up to 2 tickets per person) and submit.
3. Drawing happens exactly 2 hours before the show. Wait for your name to be called.
4. (Only if your name is called) stand in the winner line and get your photo ID and cash ready.
5. Enjoy the show!!!
Keep in mind that not all shows offer rush tickets or the lottery option. Make sure to check the website for the availability.
