At the end of a weekend getaway to Carmel by the Sea, I had the chance to visit Holman Ranch. Located in Carmel Valley, just about 14 miles east of Carmel by the Sea, it was a whole other world. We drove past beautiful mountains. The roads became narrower, and the traffic lightened up. We made our first stop at Holman Ranch’s tasting room off E. Carmel Valley Road before joining a winery tour. We were indeed in for a treat!
Nick Lowder, the owner of Holman Ranch, took us into the caves and held a private tasting for us.
Nick shared the story about how he and his wife, Hunter, came to have their own winery as part of a generational, family dream. It all started with Hunter’s father’s vision to retire on a ranch decades ago.
The experience of tasting right out of barrels were unique and special. The wine was delicious, and the conversation was fun. I particularly enjoyed the stories behind the wine making processes and decisions, as well as utilizing the “surplus” towards experimental wine projects. John and I loved the port which would soon be released to the public!
That evening, we spent some time strolling around the Ranch.
The ranch has cozy lounges and beautiful courtyards. It really is a refreshing spot for a weekend getaway.
There are various spaces on site that are suitable for private events (ie: retreats, corporate events, or weddings.) My favorite is the “cocktail room” which is filled with intricate, quirky, and humorous decor.
It has a lovely grand that definitely adds a warm tone to the atmosphere.
Thanks Hunter and Nick for the new friendships and a pleasant weekend. We hope to revisit the ranch and the tasting room soon!
